Friday, Danbury firefighters were busy saving a large white swan stuck in the ice at Poets Landing.
The department said on their Facebook page that they were called for a public assist for the report of a swan stuck in the ice in the area of Candlewood Lake near Hayestown Avenue.
Deputy Chief Stephen Williams met with the caller and checked out the situation, finding only a quarter-inch thick ice trapping the swam, making a rescue more difficult.
Firefighter D.J. Rickard realized that the "cannonball method" of moving the dock up and down in the water aided in breaking the ice which freed the swan.
"The swan appeared to be thankful for us breaking up the ice because she quickly started eating once she was able to get through the ice," the department said on Facebook. "Another successful 'out of the norm' call for A Shift."
